What are the different owner statuses?

At France Galop, we distinguish three types of owners, each with its own specific characteristics, particularly in terms of taxation and operations.

Non-involved owner :

  • You entrust your horses to a trainer without exercising control or taking part in their preparation.
  • Taxation: racing winnings are tax-exempt, but capital gains on sales remain taxable.
  • This is the most common and simplest profile to manage.

Involved non-professional owner :

  • You entrust your horses to a trainer but remain involved in their monitoring or career.
  • Taxation: winnings and bonuses are taxable under the non-professional BNC (non-commercial profits) category.
  • You can benefit from advice and support while still participating in your horse’s management.

Professional owner :

  • You carry out your activity on a habitual, ongoing basis and with a profit-making purpose.
  • Taxation: winnings and bonuses are subject to professional BNC, with the possibility of offsetting deficits against overall income, and a specific capital gains regime.
  • This status involves more comprehensive management of your activity, as well as administrative and accounting obligations.
